Experience a walk through picturesque Batsi, where the old meets the new in its characteristic narrow streets (stenies) and stone walls (aimasies); observe the small traditional chapels and dovecotes surrounded by fully blossomed gardens and running streams.
Hike towards the imposing hill above Batsi, a place devoted to the worship of Zeus in prehistoric times, and head towards Katakoilos with its characteristic gorge and fantastic tavernas.
Stroll through the ancient island capital of Paleopolis, where the local archaeological museum will provide insights of the past.
Set aside a considerable amount of time to wander in the neo-classical settlement of Chora (Capital of Andros), where strict legislation protects its unique architectural style. On the buildings’ facades and entrances you can see their year of construction and coat-of-arms being displayed. Narrow streets and private courtyards, arched windows and ornate doors, roofs, pediments, and balconies with artistic iron bars, highlight the long history and cultural development of the town, which bears influences from the historical Venetian hegemony of the Aegean archipelago.
Distinguished foundations denote the financial wealth and sophistication of the town’s benefactors. This is evident in the number of Byzantine chapels & elaborate temples present, as well as the existence of the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Modern Art and various galleries, exhibition spaces and cultural venues. The main square, covered by the shade of the perennial plane tree, is a meeting place for a cup of coffee and friendly chat. Further down the road one can find the Square of the Unknown Sailor, hosting a grand bronze statue commemorating the island’s (historical) naval supremacy, as well as the remains of the old Venetian castle.
